Professional Learning & Development

Te Wheke offers professional learning and development services specialising in the science of reading, structured literacy and tiered literacy intervention. Te Wheke has provided training and professional development on a range of topics to tertiary education institutions, private organisations, schools, and to individual service providers.

Cognitive and academic assessments

A cognitive assessment is used to better understand the processes involved in learning. Strengths and weaknesses in these areas can affect how a person learns. Academic assessments measure a person’s skills in oral language, literacy, and / or mathematics.

The results from an assessment are used to determine where someone is ‘at’ with their learning, the next steps of their learning journey, and additional supports and strategies which suit their learning needs.

The cost for assessments varies depending on what information is required to answer the referral question. An assessment process is agreed upon in advance, and quote will be provided in advance of the assessment.

Behavioural assessments

Behavioural assessments tend to be exploratory, and seek to make sense of the ‘drivers’ for particular behaviours seen at home, school, and other settings. Behavioural assessment and screening tools can be used in addition to a cognitive assessment to explore a person’s skills of daily living, the development of their executive functioning skills (e.g. planning, organisation, emotional regulation), and to assist with ‘putting numbers to’ particular patterns of behaviour.

Coaching and advoacy

Coaching and advocacy services can be arranged on an ‘as needs’ basis. This is a service that caters for very specific needs, and varies greatly depending on each individual. For example, coaching might be sought in instances where young people need support to learn new skills, or parents who wish to implement new strategies or routines to support their child. Support can also be provided to teachers and tutors in instances where they want to work creatively to support a child with particular learning needs. Advocacy may be useful when communicating the results of an assessment to schools, and other education service providers.

Policy advice and development

Te Wheke offers policy and strategy development services to government and education providers. This may involve identifying key problems and needs, analysing system requirements, managing stakeholder consultations, developing solutions, and garnering support for new policy implementation.
