Te Wheke Assessment Services

We provide assessments to explore:

  • Learning profiles

A cognitive assessment is used to build a profile of a person’s relative strengths and weaknesses to better understand how they learn.

  • Academic skills

Academic assessments measure a person’s language and literacy skills, and / or mathematics. We use this information to ‘benchmark’ where a person’s skills sit relative to those of their same-aged peers.

  • Behaviour

Behavioural assessments tend to be exploratory, and seek to make sense of the ‘drivers’ for particular behaviours seen at home, school, and other settings.

Cognitive assessment

Crudely an ‘IQ’ test, a cognitive assessment is used to help us build a picture of a person’s learning style. Findings from a cognitive assessment can help us to better understand a person’s learning strengths and weaknesses, and drive tailored teaching and learning recommendations that support their particular needs. A cognitive assessment can also be used to explore learning profiles including ‘giftedness’, and in diagnostic assessments of ADHD, Specific Learning Disorders like dyslexia, and Intellectual Disability.

Our assessment approach is thorough and consultative. This process is one we go through together to better understand a person’s strengths, needs, and their way of being. We have extensive experience working with children, adolescents and adults and will work with you to build an assessment that will best suit the needs of an individual.

We can provide cognitive and learning assessments for children, adolescents and adults to explore their learning needs, and to determine whether a Specific Learning Disorder like dyslexia may be present. We also provide behavioural assessments, including ADHD assessments, for children and adolescents. Whether the scope of an assessment is diagnostic or exploratory, we aim to provide results that are affirming, recommendations that are empowering, and clear ways forward including tailored recommendations that drive appropriate school-based or workplace strategies and accommodations.

Academic assessment

Academic assessments measure a person’s language and literacy skills, and / or mathematics skills. We use this information to ‘benchmark’ where a person’s skills sit relative to those of their same-aged peers, and to monitor their progress over time. Data from academic assessments is used to make diagnoses where appropriate, including diagnosing Specific Learning Disorders such as dyslexia and dyscalculia.

Behavioural assessment

Behavioural assessments are broad, and often exploratory. We use a combination of interview, standardised questionnaires and classroom and in-clinic observations to help us ‘put numbers to’ a person’s behaviour, and the drivers for that behaviour. Findings from behavioural assessments can be used in many ways, including contributing to diagnosis of ADHD, ASD, Intellectual Disability, and mental health concerns like anxiety and low mood or depression.
