Adult ADHD Assessments
Targeted ADHD assessments conducted in partnership with clients, primary healthcare providers, and Te Wheke psychologists, accessible across Aotearoa/New Zealand either in-person or online.
Te Wheke offers adult ADHD assessments that provide clarity, support diagnosis, and inform next steps. Our assessments are comprehensive and clarify how ADHD may be affecting your day-to-day functioning. We work collaboratively with you and your GP or Nurse Practitioner, sharing assessment findings so diagnosis and treatment can be appropriately managed in primary care.
For adult ADHD assessments we charge a flat rate of $1,000 incl. GST. This is inclusive of all assessment components, including the written report with recommendations.
Adult ADHD Assessment Process
1 - We receive your referral
Adult ADHD assessments at Te Wheke begin with a referral. This can come from your GP or Nurse Practitioner, or you can self-refer. Once we receive your referral, we review the information provided and contact you with next steps, including appointment options for a free initial consult.
2 - Initial consult
The initial consultation is a free phone call and an opportunity for us to speak directly and ensure the process is a good fit.
During this call, we will:
understand your concerns, and what you’re hoping to get from an assessment.
consider whether ADHD may be a likely explanation for your difficulties.
ensure we’re the right service for your needs.
explain the assessment process and answer any questions you might have.
If proceeding with an assessment is in your best interests, we’ll arrange the assessment session and send through any questionnaires to complete in advance, helping ensure the assessment runs smoothly.
3 - Assessment
Where appropriate, you’ll attend an assessment session with a psychologist experienced in adult ADHD. The assessment involves a detailed clinical interview, standardised questionnaires, and careful consideration of other factors that may overlap with or better explain your experiences. Throughout the assessment process, our aim is to ensure you feel understood and affirmed, and leave with a sense of clarity and clear direction — whether or not ADHD is ultimately indicated.
4 - Feedback and results
Following the assessment we will invoice you a flat rate of $1000 (incl. GST), provide clear verbal feedback and a concise written report summarising key findings and recommendations. With your knowledge and consent, the assessment findings are shared with your GP or Nurse Practitioner, who can formalise diagnosis and discuss treatment options with you in primary care.
5 - Follow-up sessions and ongoing support (Optional)
Coming to terms with an ADHD diagnosis is rarely something that happens in a single moment. It takes time to grow your understanding of what the diagnosis means for your life, and how changes following new self-management strategies or treatment affect you. We offer optional follow-up sessions to support this process. These sessions provide psychoeducation, coaching, and ongoing guidance tailored to your needs. We typically recommend 1–3 sessions which can be scheduled in quick succession after a diagnosis, or spaced out over months afterwards, depending on what works best for you. As psychologists, we do not want to assess in isolation, we want to help you make sense of your experiences, integrate new strategies, and ensure you feel supported as you navigate the shifts that come with a diagnosis.
Please note that this service is available even if you have been assessed and diagnosed by another provider. If you are seeking professional support in this post-diagnosis phase then we are well-placed to help you.
Clients often ask, “Do you think I need an assessment?”
You might consider an assessment if you:
feel persistently overwhelmed or burnt out despite ongoing efforts to cope
have longstanding difficulties with attention, organisation, follow-through, or self-regulation, particularly when reflecting on childhood and earlier life stages
notice recurring patterns of difficulty across work, study, or relationships
have often been described as “capable, but inconsistent”
are seeking understanding, validation, or direction — not just a diagnostic label
find that the question of ADHD keeps resurfacing for you over time
~
An assessment may not be the right first step if:
your difficulties are recent in onset and clearly linked to a specific stressor or life event.
another factor such as sleep deprivation, anxiety, low mood, trauma, or burnout appears more urgent to treat, or more likely to explain your current difficulties on its own.
you are seeking a quick or definitive “fix” for a specific problem, rather than a process of understanding and support. While tools such as medication can be highly effective for many people with ADHD, they are a tool, not a ‘cure’. Assessment is most helpful when you are open to a broader process of understanding and support over time.
