Adult Autism and AuDHD Assessments

Including treatment options with Te Wheke’s GP

Targeted adult assessments for autism, ADHD, or both conducted by Te Wheke’s psychologists, accessible across Aotearoa New Zealand either in-person or online.

As Te Wheke maintains a wide network of expert assessing psychologists, we can typically see you within 3 weeks for an assessment. If ADHD is confirmed, clients can be treated by our in-house GP soon thereafter.

Te Wheke offers adult assessments to diagnose ADHD and/or autism. Our assessments clarify how your mind works and how your day-to-day functioning is impacted. They also provide strategies for the future. If you are considering treatment for ADHD, we can either work collaboratively with your primary GP or place you with Te Wheke’s in-house GP. Post-diagnosis, Te Wheke can also offer therapy to help you adapt and meet your fullest potential.

For adult autism and ADHD assessments we charge a flat rate of $1,000 each, or a combined price of $1800. This is inclusive of all assessment components along with a written diagnostic report and recommendations.

Treatment Option

If ADHD is confirmed, and you wish to be treated by Te Wheke’s in-house GP, the first consultation (which includes a prescription and ‘special authority’ for subsidised repeats) is charged at a flat rate of $400. Where follow-ups are needed, these are charged at $95 each.

Adult Autism and AuDHD Assessment Processes

1 - You self refer or we receive your referral from a physician

You can simply book yourself into a free initial consult, or be referred by your GP or a Nurse Practitioner.

2 - Initial consult

The initial consultation is a free phone call. If, during the call, you decide Te Wheke is the service for you, we can book your full assessment then and there. Initial consult appointments are available throughout the week. We can typically conduct your assessment within 3 weeks of your initial consult.

During the initial phone consultation we will:

  • understand your concerns, and what you’re hoping to achieve from an assessment.

  • confirm whether your presenting question (ADHD, autism, or both) is the most likely explanation for your difficulties.

  • ensure we are the right service to meet your needs.

  • explain the assessment process and answer any of your questions.

If proceeding with an assessment we will share some questionnaires and get you started on preparations to aid in the assessment process.

3 - Assessment

You will attend an assessment session with a psychologist trained in assessment practice and experienced in adult ADHD, autism, or both. The assessment involves a detailed clinical interview, standardised questionnaires, and careful consideration of other factors that may overlap with or better explain your experiences. Throughout the assessment process, our aim is to ensure you feel understood and affirmed, and leave with a sense of clarity and direction. Ultimately, if the condition is present, the assessment will diagnose it.

4 - Feedback and results

Following the assessment we will provide clear verbal feedback and a concise written report summarising key findings and recommendations. If the condition for which you are being assessed is present, the report will formalise this diagnosis. If you would like us to, we will share the assessment findings with your GP.

5 - Treatment for ADHD (optional) - Te Wheke GP or your primary GP

Te Wheke recognises that it can be overwhelming to navigate the New Zealand health system to access treatment post diagnosis. Te Wheke has developed a streamlined approach to transition you to a medication start if ADHD is confirmed with our in-house GP. We have also worked with GPs across the country to refine our assessment reports to provide the exact information doctors need to make a medication decision.

5 - Follow-up sessions and ongoing support (optional)

Coming to terms with an ADHD or autism diagnosis is rarely something that happens in a single moment. It takes time to grow your understanding of what the diagnosis means for your life. It also takes time to understand how your new self-management strategies or treatment will affect you. We offer follow-up, strategy-focused therapy sessions to support this. These sessions provide psychoeducation, coaching, and ongoing guidance tailored to your needs. If desired, we can provide 1–3 sessions either scheduled in quick succession after a diagnosis, or spaced out over months.

This service is available even if you have been assessed and diagnosed by another provider. If you are seeking professional support in this post-diagnosis phase then we are well-placed to help you.

Clients often ask, “Do you think I need an assessment?”

You might consider an assessment if you:

  • feel persistently overwhelmed or burnt out despite ongoing efforts to cope

  • have longstanding difficulties with attention, organisation, follow-through, or self-regulation, particularly when reflecting on childhood and earlier life stages

  • notice recurring patterns of difficulty across work, study, or relationships

  • have often been described as “capable, but inconsistent”

  • are seeking understanding, validation, or direction — not just a diagnostic label

  • find that the question of ADHD and/or autism keeps resurfacing for you over time.

~

An assessment may not be the right first step if:

  • your difficulties are recent in onset and clearly linked to a specific stressor or life event

  • another factor such as sleep deprivation, anxiety, low mood, trauma, or burnout appears more urgent to treat, or more likely to explain your current difficulties on its own

  • you are seeking a quick or definitive “fix” for a specific problem, rather than a process of understanding and support. While tools such as medication can be highly effective for many people with ADHD, they are just one tool. Assessment is most helpful when you are open to a broader process of understanding.
